When should I spay or neuter my pet?
The best time to spay or neuter your pet is at 6 months of age. These procedures can be done safely in most adults as well.. Spaying and neutering pets helps to reduce risk of reproductive cancers.
Vaccines:
Vaccinations are an important part of your pet's health care. Vaccines keep your pet healthy and prevent serious diseases. We will work with you to develop a vaccination schedule tailored to your pet.
Does my pet need to be on a heartworm preventative?
Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes and can be fatal if left untreated. Having your pet on a montly heartworm preventative year round helps to reduce the risk of heartworm disease. Heartworm preventatives also defend against some intestinal worms. Interceptor Plus is our heartworm preventative of choice. Interceptor Plus is a chicken flavored, chewable tablet that covers 4 types of intestinal worms in addition to heartworms. It is safe to start heartworm preventative in puppies less than 6 months of age, but dogs over 6 months should be tested for heartworms before starting a preventative. We recommend testing for heartworms annually as our test also checks for 3 different tick-borne diseases that are prevalent in our area.
Wellness Screening and Exam
A wellness screening consists of a physical examination of your pet, blood work checking internal organ functions, and a complete blood count. A great time to do a wellness screening is when your pet comes in for their annual vaccinations. Wellness testing is great to establish a young pet's baseline in case of future health issues and is essential in senior pet care. We recommend doing a wellness screening with seniors annually or semi-annually depending on the pet. Many diseases can be effectively treated or monitored with early diagnosis, including kidney, liver, heart, dental, and endocrine disease.
Can I order medications through an outside Pharmacy?
You can certainly order from an outside pharmacy. That pharmacy will contact us for authorization. If you choose to order through a different pharmacy there is a prescription fee from us. We also have an online pharmacy associated with us called Vetsource. When ordering through them there is no prescription fee charged.
Do my pets need dentals?
Keeping up on your pet's dental health is essential to their overall health. Besides causing bad breath, dental disease has been linked to problems in other organs such as heart, liver, and kidney disease. To avoid serious comlications from dental disease, professional dental cleanings are recommended yearly.
What can I do to prevent fleas and ticks?
As many products as there are in the market, it's no wonder why pet owners are confused! Our go-to product for dogs has been Nexgard, which is a beef flavored, chewable tablet. It kills fleas and ticks, stays strong all month long, and is more palatable than similar products. We also carry Vectra as our topical alternative. Pairing either of these with Interceptor Plus will cover your dog for fleas, ticks, 4 types of intestinal worms, and heartworms.
For cat owners, Catego is a non-greasy, quick-drying formula with a high efficacy. We also carry Revolution for cats that protects against fleas, heartworms, 2 types of intestinal worms and ear mites. Talk to your veterinarian to help you decide which product best suits your pet.
